Ptuj has long had a strategically important position at a favorable crossing of the Drava River and at the intersection of two old highways: the amber route, which connected the northern Adriatic area with the Baltic, and the route along the Drava River.
During Roman times, Poetovio flourished here, the largest city in the area between the northern Adriatic and the Danube and an important center of Mithraism.
Today, two mithraeums (sanctuaries of the god Mithras) can be seen at the site of the find. In the middle of the old part of the city, you can see the oldest open-air lapidary in Slovenia. It consists of ancient monuments from Ptuj and its surroundings built into the walls of the city tower. Here also rises the Orpheus monument, a tombstone erected to the mayor of Poetovio, Marcus Valerius Verus.
A Roman brick kiln is presented in the former craft district of Poetovio.
